One Lousy Day for Connecticut Democrats

This was a really, really bad day for Connecticut Democrats.

Within a two hour period and a four mile radius, the Democrats were the focus of three embarrassing stories as they head into the convention.

First, the Democrat with the highest approval ratings of any politician in the state faced allegations he lied about his military record.     In a news conference broadcast all across the country,  Richard Blumenthal told reporters he regretted that he “misspoke” about having served in Vietnam.    Democrats could almost hear the poll numbers tumbling.

Later,  across from the State Capitol at the State Supreme Court, the Democrats’ one time frontrunner in the race for governor and Blumenthal’s fellow constitutional officer was dealt a devastating blow.   The high court ruled Susan Bysiewicz is not qualified to succeed Blumenthal.

On New Year’s Day she was the odds-on favorite to be our next governor, an office her party hasn’t been able to capture since 1986.    Now, for the first time in more than a generation, this once rising star in the Democratic party probably won’t even be on a ballot come November.

Meanwhile, around the corner from the Supreme Court, the three term Democratic mayor of the capital city was away from his city hall office again,  in court as a defendant in his corruption trial.   Eddie Perez, the host mayor of the Democratic convention this weekend faces prison time if convicted.

To be fair, Connecticut Republicans have had their bad days, too, but  this was certainly one of the worst days to be  a “D,” unless your name is George Jepsen.

  1. RE: Blumenthal. Since when does “misspoke” mean the same as lie? By the dictionary; misspoke means speaking hastily. No matter how you interpret his “misspeak”; I wouldn’t vote for him simply based on stupidity for thinking no one would find out the truth. It appears he’s just another politician from CT trying to misspeak his way into the Senate.

  2. You don’t help your reputation as a political commentator by having Ed Marcus speak as an authority. You come off as out of touch.

  3. Dennis,

fiirst I want to say thank you for the job that you are doing. Now, I would like to first sound off on Dick Bulmenthal. He should be ashamed of himself for telling a lie, or making up a story about his military service. I served in the military on board the USS John F. Kennedy and don’t have to make up a story about my service, so why should he? Is this someone that we want to send to Washington?

Now to Bysiewicz, How is she going to run for Attorney General that is suppose to interpet the law as to what is says, and before she even gets there she is reading into the law what she wants to fit her Political Agenda for the moment? the Court Ruling was right on the money yesterday letting us know that yesterday. Would she read into the law what she wants it to read if and when she were to ever get in the Attorney Gerneral’s position?

The Dem. Party never should have nomoniated her as a possible candidate knowing that she didn’t have the 10 years. As a Dem. I’m a little upset with the way things are looking.

Lastly, Mittletown board of Education members should stop messing with the investigation before someone on the board gets arrested. What do they care if a cop is there if they don’t have anything to hide.
Thank you, Michael Perry (South Windsor, CT)
